TAYLORMADE UNVEILS TWO NEW DRIVERS TaylorMade Golf has unveiled two new drivers, which it claims 'are set to take the golf industry by storm', and challenging Callaway and Nike's square-headed drivers. The Burner and r7 SuperQuad have been designed, says TaylorMade boss Mark King, to appeal respectively to two different types of golfer - the cool, confident golfer who wants to grip it and rip it off the tee with total forgiveness and the player prepared to tweak his club in search of distance and accuracy. The bullet-headed Burner has been given a 'sleek, sexy and powerful' look to appeal to golfers producing high clubhead speed but demanding distance despite the occasional miss-hit. And TaylorMade hasn't missed the chance to fire a cheeky broadside at its rivals by claiming the Burner 'wears its 460 cc size beautifully, not awkwardly or clumsily like certain box-shaped drivers. Just as a race car looks fast standing still, so does the Burner.' The club features a 46-inch SuperFast RE*AX shaft, longer and lighter than standard, helping deliver 'a potential boost of up to 14 yards.' It also comes in a TP version, with slightly smaller head, one-degree 'open' clubface and shaft shorter by half-an-inch. The club, which claims to sound like 'the crack of a whip' will be available in 8.5, 9.5 and 10.5 degree lofts and three shaft flexes (X, S and R). Recommended cost is £219. The r7 SuperQuad has a 460 cc head with four interchangeable cartridge ports to help custom-fit the club to the golfer demanding a 'fine-tuned explosion' off the clubface, finished in a deep, rich black. It's aimed, says TaylorMade, at those who 'enjoy tweaking their equipment in attempts to optimise their equipment and make the absolute most out of their physical abilities'. In the right hands, the selection of weights can raise or lower the launch angle by 1.5 degrees, promoting a lateral change in ball flight of up to 28 yards. It will be available in four lofts (8.5 to 11.5) and four flexes (X, S, R and M). Recommended price is £279. A modified r7 SuperQuad TP will cost £399. |

THE BAFFLER PRO Among a fleet of new utility, rescue-style clubs being released by various clubmakers, the re-launched DWS Baffler is among the most elegant, with its compact head and lime green/gunmetal Aldila HL shaft. For those who believe that these hybrids are a relatively new phenomenon, the original Baffler, with its sole rails to help deliver the clubhead through semi-rough, was first launched in 1975 and represented the first utility metal on the market. This new Baffler DWS (Dual Weighting System) promises greater distance, accuracy and forgiveness whiles its brother, the Baffler Pro is designed for more accomplished players who want a more versatile non-offset club to replace the long-iron. EGTF Pro Bill Abbott says, "I recently tried this club and found it to be a very versatile replacement for the long irons in the bag. Just make sure you pick the right one to suit your game. The weighting within the club is supposed to effect a soft draw but subsequent shots gave me adequate control with my stock fade and despite a mere 16 degrees of loft, delivered a far more satisfying high ball flight than any 3- or 4-iron it might replace." On the whole, a good addition to the Cobra range and it will certainly help those weekend warriors still trying to cope with their 3- or 4-irons. |
