It seems apt that with our upcoming Pro Am in Thailand in March, that we focus our travel section on this beautiful country. Thailand has been in a rebuilding period since the dreadful events on Boxing Day 2004, when the tsunami struck and caused death and destruction throughout vast areas of Asia. The Thai Government and property investors are pouring huge amounts of money into the leisure industry in Thailand with golf being number one on the list. From the beach resorts in the South to the mountainous regions in the North, to the vibrant cities of Bangkok and Pattaya, Thailand offers golf courses to suit all abilities and pockets. Such has been the recovery in Thailand, that it was recently voted up and coming golf vacation destination by the International Association of Golf Travel Agents. Certainly the appearance of major tournaments from the Asian and European Tours, and players of the stature of Tiger Woods and Ernie Els visiting regularly, can only help the reputation of this golfing region. There are now over 200 courses in Thailand, with another 50 in the planning stages, so this really is a serious player in the golfing holidays market. If you also add in the fabulous hospitality, the friendliness of the people, fantastic value for money and the constant year round warm weather, it is difficult to find a reason not to go. Thai Country Club and Alpine Sports Club are both well know courses in the Bangkok area and both have hosted major professional tournaments.
Thai Country Club
Alpine Sports Club Laem Chabaeng is a 27 hole complex in the Pattaya area, designed by Jack Nicklaus with trademarks of the great man's course philosophies on all three nines.
Laem Chabaeng St Andrews 2000 is also in the Pattaya region and boasts two par 6 holes measuring over 1700 yards between them. Great for all you long hitters!!
St Andrews 2000 Moving down the country, Hua Hin is proving an extremely popular golfing and tourest destination, being that the King of Thailand has his summer palace there. Hua Hin is a much quieter resort than many others, attracting more families to this tranquil part of the country. Bill Abbott commented: "I have travelled over to work in Hua Hin for the last five years, running our Diploma Courses at the beautiful Lake View Golf & Country Club, and I would highly recommend this area as a golfing destination. Other worthy courses are the Nicklaus designed Springfield Golf Club, Majestic Creek, Palm Hills and Royal Hua Hin."
Lake View Golf & Country Club Further South towards Phuket, lies the world class Blue Canyon Country Club, with two 18 hole courses that are regarded amoung the finest in Thailand. They are a popular destination for people who want to have a golf and beach holiday.
Blue Canyon These are just a sample of the many courses around Thailand and it is up to you to choose the area you wish to explore, but I can guarantee that you wont be disappointed with the wonderful 'land of smiles'. |
