Thailand Pro Am 2007
|
The Thailand Pro Am took place at the beautiful Lake View Golf & Country Club in Cha Am, about 3 hours south of Bangkok. This year was a quiet affair in terms of the number of teams, but it was great to see many of the regular participants of this fantastic event. The week began with a welcome get together in Hua Hin where the teams were told the format for the week and enjoyed a few cold beers courtesy of EGTF President, Peter Dunne. The texas scramble signalled the start of the week's competitions and scoring was fantastic, with birdies and eagles being thrown around for fun. Devlyn Fraser's team triumphed with a score of net 57 which, given the difficulty of the greens, was superb. The defending champions were back all the way from Australia, with Lee Holdsworth leading his men from the front. The conditions were benign during the week, but with temperatures touching ninety degrees each day, the guys from Melbourne seemed a little more used to the heat. The format for the team prize is always tough and tends to bring the best to the top and throughout the week the teams of Lee Holdsworth, Bill Abbott and Stewart Craig battled for the top three positions. The title eventually went to team Australia after three hard fought days, with a stapleford points total of 297, allowing them to retain the trophy. The Pro tournament was a battle of the big guns (literally!!) with Stewart Craig and Lee Holdsworth locking horns to decide which side of the hemisphere the trophy would return. The standard was extremely high, especially considering the speed and slope of the greens. Stewart held his nerve and became the toast of Scotland with scores of 75, 77, 74 over the three days and a fine victory. Our presentation evening was a very lively affair, held at the Butterfly Rock Sports Bar, where we were treated to food and live music during the night, with myself and Peter Dunne on hand to give out the trophies to the winners. My thanks go to Lake View Golf & Country Club for the superb condition of their course and the friendliness of their staff. To Peter and everyone at Butterfly Rock for hosting our welcome and presentation evenings. To Alan Simpson, the tournament director who made the week go smoothly. Finally, to all my fellow competitors who played the competition as it was designed to be played, with a smile on their faces from the first day to the last, thank you guys. I hope to see you all at an EGTF tournament in the near future.
