Duncan Bagshaw's Sponsored Run
|
Since the start of the year, Leicestershire EGTF Golf Professional Duncan Bagshaw has been taking part in a series of races/challenges to raise money for The Prostate Cancer Charity and Prostaid. Duncan is racing in memory of his dad who died of the disease in 2006 after a 4 year fight and to raise awareness of Prostate cancer and how serious a danger it is to the male population. For some reason it's still thought of in some circles as a less serious cancer than others. It isn't! It kills one man every hour and 35,000 men will be diagnosed with it this year. "When dad was diagnosed he walked 5-6 miles every morning, played golf 3 times a week, swam a mile twice a week and regularly showed up guys half his age at fitness classes. His lifestyle was very healthy but this cancer is indiscriminate regardless, it's important we recognise what a danger it is to the male population." His father's example has spurred Duncan on to get fit for these challenges and he's lost around 2 stone in the process. "In the past I've not been particularly fit and have been nicknamed Chunky Dunky, Fat Bag among others! This has helped me keep motivated but to be honest if training gets hard I just think how lucky I am to be able to do this and that any pain will soon go away, but for loads of people that's not the case. That puts it in perspective and I just keep going." Duncan is aiming to raise at least £1000 through his challenges but ideally would like to raise £2500 to help the fight.
On March 1st he completed The Beast - a 10 mile equine cross country course near Melton Mowbray. www.purepersonaltraining.co.uk On March 21st he ran in the Mighty Deerstalker, a 10km day/night challenge up and down the side of two mountains in the Borders. Mud, obstacles and a 400m run up river etc. Finally on May 31st he will run the Edinburgh Marathon and is aiming for a time under 4 hours and after that he has his sights set on more challenges.
