EGTF Membership Benefits

We are often asked, “what benefits are gained from becoming an EGTF member.”  The EGTF membership represents fantastic value for money when you look at the benefits that you are able to become involved in.

1.  The EGTF qualification is a nationally recognised award in the UK, meeting all the necessary standards for teaching as set down by our government backed awarding body, ABC Awards. More and more EGTF professionals are finding work throughout the UK, Europe and the rest of the World, as the standard of our teachers becomes better known to the public and golfing establishments.

2.  The EGTF membership card is accepted at many golf clubs around the World, offering either reduced green fees or complimentary golf.  Please ensure you make contact with the secretary or golf director before you turn up as a matter of courtesy, to ask their particular policy on this matter.  This benefit alone can save you hundreds of pounds per year in green fees.  Please remember that courtesy is at the discretion of each individual golf club.

3.  As you will know, insurance these days is vital for any responsible teaching professional.  Through the EGTF, members with a UK address are able to gain access to a first class insurance policy at greatly reduced rates.  The group policy works out at £60 per member and offers great cover for you and your students.  An individual policy could cost anything from £300.

4.  We now have a very good CPD (continual professional development) program running, which is designed to allow our members to either upgrade their knowledge in certain areas, or to help push them into specialist sections of the teaching world.  Our CPD seminars utilise the very latest teaching ideas from around the World and are very competitively priced from £100 per seminar.  Other organisations charge much more.  Dates and times of the various seminars can be found on our website (Members’ only section), and along with our Masters Course, provides everything that an open minded teaching professional could possibly want, to help push themselves to the next level.  Remember, the more knowledge you have, the more confident your teaching will become.

5.  The list of companies that are now associated with the EGTF and offer our members discounts on their products, is growing every year.
Quintic Consultancy – One of the best video analysing software programs on the market.

Yes Golf Putters – Makers of the c groove putter, number two putter on all tours worldwide.

Explanar – First class teaching aid, invented by Luther Blacklock and endorsed by Butch Harmon.

Oliva Nova Resort – 5-star golf complex near Alicante, Spain, that provides excellent deals and packages for EGTF professionals to take groups for teaching, or for a personal holiday.

Golfsmith Europe – The opportunity to purchase golf club components, heads, shafts and grips, at trade prices.

ProStance – Amazing golf teaching aid from EGTF Professionals Dr Paul Hurrion and Stewart Craig.

Bespokeclubs.com – Trade prices for EGTF members.

6.  We get a number of teaching jobs through the office each year and if you are on the employment list, we may just be able to find something to suit you.  We also have links with the Julian Krinsky Foundation in America, who run a huge golf summer camp and are looking for EGTF teaching professionals to work in the golf camps each year.

As you will see, EGTF members have access to a variety of excellent deals that make the yearly membership great value.
For more information on any of the above services, please don’t hesitate to contact us at info@egtf.co.uk

EGTF Pro Am Murcia 2011

The 4th EGTF Pro Am in the Murcia region took place recently and proved to be the best so far.

Organised superbly as usual by EGTF Professional Gavin Riddall and his team from The Golf Factory, it took place over 4 days and was played in glorious sunshine!  Many of the people attending were arriving from European Countries where golf has not been possible for many months, so this was a welcome relief to actually get out onto the course and hit some shots.

21 teams attended this year, which I think is the largest number we have had at a Pro Am, and this made for an excellent week of golf and camaraderie.

The Texas Scramble was played at Las Collinas Golf Club, rated in the top 5 new Golf Resorts in the world, and it certainly turned the heads of everyone who played.  The scoring was as always, sensational, but with an incredible total of 16 under par gross, the team from

Mallorca Golf Academy

TEXAS SCAMBLE WINNERS

Mallorca Golf Academy took the title.

The main tournament was played over three days and three courses (Roda, Peraleja and Las Collinas) which always makes for an interesting format.  The Amateur section was keenly contested with a strong field of 60+ players, but with all the consistency of someone who has played the game at a high level for some time, young

STEVEN SWOROWSKI AMATEUR WINNER

STEVEN SWOROWSKI AMATEUR WINNER

Steven Sworowski at only 14 years of age, won the title.  With scores of 36, 37 and 38 points on some tough courses, he claimed the title by 2 shots, which I’m sure you will agree was a great achievement.

The Team competition went down to the wire with any number of teams having the chance to win on the last day, but when the pressure was on, the local team of

MEDAESTHETICS" TEAM WINNERS

"MEDAESTHETICS" TEAM WINNERS

“The Medaesthetics” lead by EGTF Professional Mark Shakespeare, won through with a fabulous last round of 120 team points to win by 3, with an overall total of 352 points.

It was great to see so many old and new faces in the EGTF Professional Event and as this Tournament seems to grow each year, it will give even more members the chance to play some competitive golf early in the season.

Scoring was tough over the three days for many players, mainly due to the lack of golf played by many people leading up to the event, but this year attracted some very talented EGTF golfers, who showed what can be done, and produced some excellent scoring.

MARK-HOUSEGO-PRO-WINNER

MARK HOUSEGO - EGTF PROFESSIONAL WINNER

Mark Housego, who had a share of the title last year, went one better this year with a wonderful display of golf over the three days to claim the Tournament by 5 shots with scores of 69, 72, 71 for a 3 under par total of 212 for the week.  I’m sure you will join me in wishing Mark all the best as he tries his hand at Professional Golf Tours this year.  This is certainly the start he was looking for.

Thanks once again to Gavin and Paula for all their hard work during the week, to all the Amateurs who turned up for some sun and golf, and finally to my friends and fellow EGTF Professionals who make these Tournaments possible.  It will be great to see you all again at future EGTF events.

EGTF Masters Course Thailand December 2010

As part of our Continual Professional Development program I was asked to put on a Masters Course in Thailand for five eager EGTF Professionals.

These courses are always a pleasure to put on as you can give people some more advanced tools that can push their teaching careers further.

We were based at the lovely Lake View Country Club just outside Hua Hin, and as usual we were made to feel extremely welcome.

We test our members teaching standards on Day 1 with a video lesson, making sure their skills have been kept up since attending the Diploma Course.

The Masters Course covers some of the more important aspects of coaching, including Video Analysis, Putting Biomechanics, Advanced Short Game, Body Type Analysis, Golf Psychology, Customer Service/Marketing, and how to give a Masters Lesson.

Playing & Skills Test

Skills Tests

We also test the playing and demo skills of the students, with the standards to be achieved being slightly stronger than the Diploma Course.  It is always important to try to keep your playing standard in decent shape as people do like to see a good demo from their Pro.

Playing and Skills Tests

Playing and Skills Tests

The playing test was completed over the excellent A+B Courses at Lake View and provided a stern test for the players with 3 of the 5 students getting through this section during the week.

After all the knowledge throughout the week, the final Teaching assessment took place on the putting green.  This for many is a different part of teaching, as putting lessons are not the normal diet for most coaches, but with the advanced knowledge learned during the week, the guys gave some fantastic putting lessons.

It was a pleasure to come over to Thailand to conduct this Masters Course and the EGTF Professionals attending showed excellent dedication and standards throughout the week.  Hopefully the knowledge gained from this Course can elevate them to a higher level as coaches.  Thank you guys, for a wonderful week.

Thailand Tournament, Hua Hin, 2010

The EGTF Pro Am in Thailand was another fantastic week.  At a time of the year when many people are looking at the onset of Winter, it was great to get away to a sunnier climate and play some golf.

Bill Palm Hills

Bill Abbott at Palm Hills

This week is slightly different to other EGTF Tournaments and is designed primarily as a social trip, with more of a Society feel to the proceedings.  The courses, weather and people in Thailand are fabulous and it’s always a pleasure to go over and put on the shorts and play some golf!!

The week is open to EGTF members and their guests and we play an Amateur event and an EGTF Pro event over the course of 5 days to give everyone a good chance to find their swing.

This year we played at Palm Hills Golf Course and Banyan Country Club.  Both courses were in excellent condition and provided us with a stern test of golf.

Quintic Laboratory

I had the pleasure recently of going to the Quintic Putting Laboratory in Coventry to meet up with EGTF Professional and the world’s leading putting guru, Dr Paul Hurrion.

DR PAUL HURRION AND BILL ABBOTT

DR PAUL HURRION AND BILL ABBOTT

Paul was taking me through the intricacies of the Quintic Ball Roll Software, which can revolutionise the way putting can be analysed and taught.  It is now used on Tour by Taylormade and Cleveland/Srixon to test their putters as it gives fantastic feedback as to what the putter and ball are doing at impact.  It is basically a launch monitor for putting!!

Paul’s knowledge on the biomechanics of the putting stroke are second to none in the golf industry and why the world’s best players trust their strokes to him (Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Padraig Harrington and Robert Karlsson to name a few).

TESTING AT THE QUINTIC LAB

TESTING AT THE QUINTIC LAB

Spending some time at a facility like this is eye opening and really does bring it home to you that putting is very much a technical discipline and not ‘about the feel’ as many coaches will tell you.

The Ball Roll Software spits out loads of data that can help analyse the problems that people have in their putting strokes, and it is definitely worth looking at more seriously if you want to branch out and become a putting specialist.

GEL GOLF have some Putting Academies operating in the UK which are doing very well,  using Paul’s software along with the GEL Putters he designed.  More information on becoming a GEL Fitting Centre can be see on www.gelgolf.co.uk

QUINTIC BALL ROLL ANALYSIS - GEL VICIS PUTTER

QUINTIC BALL ROLL ANALYSIS - GEL VICIS PUTTER

The Ball Roll Software for 2011 includes a very upmarket, high speed camera to help with the analysis, lights and a camera station.  Although the prices are not cheap, if you want to take putting to the highest level, then it would be a great investment.  The whole package is around £5,000.

A big thank you to Paul for all his help and expertise, and if you would like to know more about the Ball Roll Software, log onto www.quinticballroll.com or www.quintic.com

CPD Course Review – Spain 2011

The first CPD courses for 2011 were conducted at Oliva Nova Golf Resort in Spain, where we were covering Vision Training for Golf and the Advanced Short Game.

EGTF Master Professional, Paul Tolley, has spent many years studying the effects that the eyes play on golf.  This was a really fascinating day.  Paul began by showing how important the eyes are for gathering information that is then sent to the brain.  This then initiates the motor skill needed to produce our golf swing.

There were a number of tests that were covered to see how strong or weak our eyes were and how we train them to work better for us.

Once the theory side of things was completed, it was time to get outside and see how this information could help us on the golf course and especially the putting green, where the margins for missing and holing are small.

Vision Training is definitely something that very few coaches know anything about and yet is so important.  This day was literally an eye opener in understanding how our eyes function, and the type of things we can do to improve their performance.

Thanks to Paul Tolley for his excellent presentation and information on this subject.

Our second day was a little more familiar, tackling Advanced Short Game and how to create a more repeatable motion when faced with pressure shots.

We use the Pelz Finesse Swing system as our model for these days as it is widely used by the majority of the world’s top players and is considered to be the best method on the market.

We begin the day with a brief introduction into the short game, then it’s straight out to tackle the short game handicap test.  This is a fantastic means of identifying the areas of weakness in the short game.  The test was compiled by Dave Pelz to use in his short game schools and gives us a measuring tool with which we can constantly manage this part of the game.

The guys on the Course soon found out that their standards could do with some technical work to allow them to feel more confident over certain shots, and this is the beauty of the test as the results are there in front of you.

After lunch we went back onto the range to work on the various Finesse Swing system shots, which hopefully gave everyone a better insight into how to play the shots that help to make us better players.

In the Short Game we must have a way of measuring our standards, because then we will be able to manage it correctly.  This CPD day allows good interaction between theory and practical and everyone went away with a host of good information that will make them more consistent under pressure.

Thanks to everyone who took part in these excellent learning days.

Special Olympics Golf

EGTF Pro, Jeff Swanson

Jeff Swanson in front of his signThings have been great since I got back from England.  I officially set up shop here in St. Anton as “Golfschule Arlberg” and as you see on the picture I advertise as an EGTF Training Center.  My lesson book is running at about 25 hours per week now and at my rate of €50 per hour I am very happy with the added income I am now generating.   I have bought a Casio EX-.FH 100 (cheaper version of the F1, only €250, works great, good slow motion).

Jeff Swanson with elderly coupleI had a great experience last July when an elderly man and his wife showed up for one of the introductory golf lessons paid for by the Tourist office (8-10 hours a week).  He asked me about a private lesson for the next day for him and his wife and during the lesson we got to talking and it turns out that he is a lifelong resident of St. Andrews, Scotland and hadn’t had a lesson since he was 14 years old and that was 64 years ago.   I felt great that he asked for a private lesson and he was really pleased with it.  I invited him and his wife to a beer and I was able to get a few good stories out of him about St. Andrews.

Special Olympics GroupThe Special Olympics Golf that I am doing is going great. I am now the Austrian National Coach.  We had our National Summer Games in June 2010 and my Students came home with a Gold and Silver Medal in the Unified Golf Division (Fourball, Special Olympian with a Unified Partner).  Based on these results we got invited to participate in Athens, Greece at the World Special Olympics Summer Games in June 2011.  My daughter, Katharina, 18 years old with Down syndrome, will be competing in the Individual 9 Hole Competition and the other Girl will be in Unified Golf.   Check it out at http://www.athens2011.com/.  It is the largest sporting event in the world in 2011 with about 7500 athletes. The golf competition has 5 divisions with a total of 135 Golfers from 26 countries

Special Olympics Europe has asked me to direct an international  3 day coaching seminar at the end of May 2011 at a resort near Lisbon, Portugal and I am really looking forward to that.

The club that I am Managing, GC Arlberg, (in addition to teaching) is about to expand to 9 Holes and my goal now is to have the Practice facilities completely separate from the Course.  As it is now I have the first hole fairway running through the Driving Range and it causes enough problems already for everybody with just our 6-Hole course.

Just today the PGA Pro at the club that I work at with the Special Olympians asked me if I had an interest in doing some courses for him this summer.  I said that of course I was interested but I have to have the time for that.  I think I will be too busy this summer with the growth of my Golf School and the expansion of our course to 9 Holes.  I will have to see about that one.

An interesting thing happened when I wanted to change my status from Amateur to Pro with the Austrian Golf Association.   They were not immediately ready to recognise me as “Pro” because I was not PGA.  I quoted the rule book and there is no mention of the PGA as sole provider of Golf Lessons and a Pro is basically anyone who would accept money for lessons.  I said to them that if they had a problem we could write a letter to the R and A asking their opinion. I think they didn’t want to be embarrassed and after that they did accept me as status of Pro on their computer similar to all of the PGA guys I know.  There was one sentence in their response that went to they effect that “I would not be recognized by the PGA as a PGA Pro” and I responded that “I hope not because I haven’t done any of their courses” and that I am fully satisfied with my Diploma from the EGTF.   It isn’t really a matter of the Austrian governing golf association to determine who is Pro or not but they do have a strong tie in with the Austrian PGA.  You would be able to argue “restraint of trade” if they really created a big problem.

Driving Range AustriaTypical Golf Teacher Problem:  I don’t have time to play as much anymore.  Seriously, my teaching season here is about 16 weeks and after mid-September I will be playing again.   And you know what, having taken the course with you I have gained a lot of respect from the locals here and it is really a lot of fun teaching and I am growing into the role of the “local Pro”.  There are a lot of side benefits. I got free greenfees at all the courses I went to play except for one.   Last week I played in a tournament at my last club that I was a member and played a superb round of one over par.  My old friends were very impressed and I was thrilled with being able to show them that as a Pro I can actually also play a decent game. My best round in 3 years.

EGTF Pro, John Dunphy

My name is John Dunphy,  a proud member of the EGTF, having
transferred from the WGTF approx four years ago.

John Dunphy in front of lorryI have spent the last six months designing and converting a truck into
a mobile workshop and  living area. I am now ready to fulfill my aim of
travelling around Europe teaching and mending/fitting golf clubs and
currently working out of ‘The Kerries ‘driving range in Tralee, Co Kerry, Ireland.

Custom Golf lorryThe truck will be based in Font de Llop golf club near Alicante in
Spain during the winter months. This course is just fifteen minutes
drive from an excellent guest house (Mine) from which I organise winter golf breaks.

See http://www.themagicfountainretreat.com/.  The Oliva Nova golf  course (where most of our instruction courses take place) is approx 1
hours drive away. The truck will be in Oliva Nova during the CPD days
and teaching course, in November.  I look forward to seeing you there.

As an aside, my latest pupil is 84 years old and playing off a handicap of 18, is this a record?  I for one will not be playing him for money anytime soon!!
